The need to belong is a powerful and fundamental motivator of human behaviour. The connection between a sense of belonging and cognitive performance—as well as physical and emotional health and wellbeing—is well established. However, we are only now beginning to understand the toll that distributed work has taken on employees’ sense of belonging. With the physical workplace no longer the de facto location where all employees report every day, what can organisations do to foster a sense of belonging among their people?
